Where Are You Turning? ~ Sunday Devotional

Where are you turning?

“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”  Jeremiah 2:13 (NIV)

These were God’s chosen people who had everything they needed and yet they turned away from Him.  They looked to idols and things that weren’t dependable.

How many times have we done the same thing?

How many times have I turned to things or people, accomplishments or possessions, to comfort, guide, or fulfill me when I should be turning to Jesus?  He lives in me and He has, and is, everything I need.

He’s the same for you.  Yet we find ourselves, just as the Israelites, turning away from God and putting our trust in things that are not trustworthy.

The scripture above is from the Old Testament but we’re reminded again in John 4 when Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman that He is the living water.  When we drink from His well, we won’t need to turn to other sources to be satisfied.

Today is Easter.  We’re celebrating it in a way we’ve never before.  This is the one day of the year that many people, regular churchgoers and non alike, end up in a pew.  But most of our churches will be empty today, as they should be given our current circumstances. However, the story doesn’t change.  God is the same. The end of the story is still the same.

Jesus is alive and well!  He is faithful. When nothing around us is certain, He is certain.  He is the sure thing.

During this trying time, let us not forsake our God, our spring of living water.  Let us not turn to empty promises and quick fixes. Instead, let us go to His well and drink from it and stay close to the Source of all that we have need of.

He won’t forsake us.  Let us not forsake Him.

Happy Sunday and Happy Easter!
