What’s Weighing You Down?
Recently, Ethan was heading out the door with his backpack to go to class. He’s commuting to Bloomington four days a week to finish up his final college semester. He paused before he left and opened his backpack. He dug around and tossed out a pair of goggles (biochemistry major) and a notebook. I said, “You don’t need anything extra weighing you down, do you?” He shrugged and off he went.
What I noticed when he tossed out those couple of items was his backpack looked the same before and after. It wasn’t as if the backpack got smaller or even changed shape. But given that Ethan not only walks around campus with that backpack on, he also rides his bike a ways from where he has to park. The extra weight he tossed out of his backpack seemed negligible, but over time, it wouldn’t feel like nothing.
Are you carrying extra weight? Not physical weight but emotional weight? Unnecessary worries? God can handle them if you'll give them to Him. Share on XYou know, when I finally stopped carrying my burden of weight loss worries and body insecurity, I became lighter. Not lighter physically, but lighter spiritually. Lighter mentally. I was just like Ethan’s backpack. I looked the same, but I didn’t feel the same. I was lighter because I shed what was weighing me down.
It’s the same with women who I have helped along the way. Women who have chosen to live fit and free. They might not be displaying smaller “after pictures,” but they are showing up confidently in pictures. They’re not weighed down with worries. They’re enjoying their current season of life.
After Ethan left, I had to ask myself, “Am I unnecessarily carrying extra weight?” Am I carrying a burden I don’t need to be carrying? The thing is, it might be something small. It might not seem like a big thing, but it’s still weighing me down. And over time, it’ll only get heavier.
Before Ethan left, he simply tossed the couple of items on the floor and headed out the door. He knows me well enough to know that those two items wouldn’t still be on the floor when he got home. He wouldn’t have to pick them up again. I picked them up and put them in a safe place. God will do the same thing for us if we toss our burdens to Him.
Hebrews 12:1 says, “let us throw off everything that hinders.” What’s hindering you? Are you carrying extra weight? I’m not talking about pounds on a scale. I’m talking about burdens. What burden are you carrying? It might not seem very inconvenient right now, but the longer you carry it, the heavier it will become. Give it to the Lord today.
