What Keeps You Up at Night? ~ Sunday Devotion
I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely. Psalm 63:6-8 (NLT)
What keeps you up at night? When you lie awake, what are you thinking about?
The cares of the world try to invade our minds at the time when we need peace the most. We can move throughout our days and push aside our troubles, but when we lie down, those troubles are what keep us up at night.
The to-do list that didn’t get completed. Hurtful words spoken to you. A text or an email that you keep going over trying to figure out what the sender was “really” saying. A wayward child. A declining parent. That binge you went on. I could go on and on. The list is endless of all the things that might keep you up at night.
The Lord is your helper, and He wants to help you experience blessed rest each night. Share on XThat’s not how God intends us to spend our nights. In fact, He doesn’t want us to spend our days being troubled either. He is our helper, and He wants to hold you while you rest. In fact, He wants to hold you throughout the day. But we must allow Him to do that. Cling to Him. Fill your mind with His Word so that when troubling thoughts plague you, you have something to replace them with.
Some ways I’ve been able to shift my thoughts at night:
- Go through the alphabet and think of one thing for each letter to be grateful for.
- Recite a verse like Psalm 4:8 (NKJV): I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
- Recite a prayer such as The Lord’s Prayer or Guardian Angel Prayer.
Action Step: Is something keeping you up at night? Give it to the Lord. When you do, you will ease into a blessed rest. Try one of the methods I shared above.
Happy Sunday!
Note: This is Mental Health Awareness Month, so I want to remind you that it’s okay to seek help from a professional. If you find yourself lying awake most nights, struggling to sleep because you can’t turn off your racing thoughts, please seek help.
