Turn Away – Sunday Devotion
Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word. Psalm 119:37 (NLT)
If only there had been grocery pick up 20 years ago?! I could list all the reasons I love grocery pick up, but today I’ll mention this “if only” reason: I wouldn’t have found myself scanning magazine covers and being enticed by the latest article that promised to have the solution to losing my belly fat! More times than I can count, I could not turn away from those magazines. They knew what words would gain my attention and as a result, go into my cart.
As if magazines full of false promises of weight loss, flat tummies, and a “better me” via overpriced pills and programs weren’t enough, the internet came along. Searching the worldwide web for a fix to my poochy belly became a part-time job for me. Needless to say, it didn’t pay anything and only took more of my money as I bought every pill and supplement they advertised. I could not turn away.
Then there was social media. Since comparison had already been a major part of my life, I only fell deeper into the trap. Now there were people showing before and after pictures, and I could not turn away until I found the magic shake they drank or the “natural remedy” they used to lose extra weight.
Are you spending time on these worthless things like I was? I lost so much time, money, and peace of mind. Although I was sure I’d finally find the answer on the pages of the magazines or hit the jackpot with the right Google search, it wasn’t until I decided to turn away from those captivating headlines and turn to God’s Word that I found the truth. I found life. I found freedom. And I learned how to care for my body in a way that honors how God uniquely created me.
You are not just anybody. You are somebody who God created in a special way. Stop wasting time and money and allowing life to pass you by while you’re caught up in the pursuit of weight loss. Read God’s Word. Receive His unconditional love for you, then embrace this age and stage of life. God still has plans for you…and it’s not to lose weight!
Action Step: Instead of scrolling social media, doing yet another Google search, or turning the pages of a magazine in search of a solution to your weight loss worries, turn to the Bible. Let Him love you through His words and promises. Then be a good steward of all that He’s entrusted to you. He’s your solution.
