Slow Down to Speed Up

Recently, I came in from my run and was in a bit of a hurry to get to the shower and get on with my day. In my rush of untying my shoes, I actually created a knot and had to spend extra time getting the knot out and my shoe off.

“There it is again,” I said to myself, “that thought that maybe I should slow down if I want to speed up.” It has been coming up often.

I’m hurrying to make a meal only to get sloppy and spill something, then I have to spend extra time cleaning up my mess.

I’m in a hurry to get dressed, trying to get my foot in my pant leg only to start stumbling around the bathroom and trying to not fall.

Just days before this, I was taking clothes out of the dryer trying to get them hung and folded quickly only to find myself fumbling with hangers, clothes falling on the floor, and me spending more time with that load of laundry than I would have had I simply taken my time.

Are you getting the picture? My attempt at hurrying things along only set me back. Maybe slowing down would actually help me speed up.

If you want to speed up, start by slowing down. Share on X

I’m thinking of all the times I was in a hurry to lose weight. I’d seek out the best quick fix and get to work on it. I might make a little progress at first, but eventually I was back at square one.

It’s that time of year when people are doing what I used to – searching for a quick fix. Committing to extremes and hoping that a transformation will come quickly. Going at that pace might work for a month or two, but many of those people are right back where they were, starting over yet again.

What if this year is different? What if you slowed down? Take one step at a time. Commit to one habit that you can implement. Get good at that then add another. Progress might be slow, but by this time next year, you’ll still be going. You’ll be farther along on your journey than you would have been if you’d shot out of the gate at full speed.

If you’re caught up in the hustle of the season or feeling like you have to make quick work of changing your body, pause. Slow down a little. You might find that you actually get where you want to go a little quicker than you expected.
