When the Shortcut Isn’t Safe ~ Sunday Devotion
When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” Exodus 13:17 (NIV)
The safest way may not be the shortest way.
When I write emails or texts, I only have to write a few letters then “big brother” takes over and tries to complete my sentence. That’s helpful…until it’s not. Until it fills in a word I didn’t mean or autocorrects something that completely changes my message.
Shortcuts aren’t always helpful.
When I was in the middle of my own body image and weight struggles, it was the flashy headlines that grabbed my attention:
Lose Belly Fat Forever!
The Secret to Dropping 5 Pounds Fast!
Standing in the checkout line, I’d grab the magazine, convinced I’d finally found the answer. But inside? Another pill…another cleanse…another gimmick. It might have worked for a minute, but it was never sustainable. And more often than not, I’d end up feeling worse – physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Taking the shortcut might lead us farther away from the Lord. Stay close to Jesus and trust that His way is best. Share on XThere are plenty of people and products promising quick fixes to our weight and wellness struggles. But most of them aren’t safe. And more importantly, they aren’t God’s way.
If we keep chasing shortcuts, we’ll find ourselves battling lies, temptation, disappointment, and more frustration. Sometimes, like the Israelites, we might even want to go back to our old ways – not because they were better, but because they were familiar.
But God leads us differently. His way may take longer. It may feel harder at times. But it’s the path that builds real strength – inside and out. It’s the path that protects us from unnecessary battles we’re not ready for. It’s the path that leads to lasting freedom.
If you want to live fit and free, follow God on the path He’s chosen for you. Trust that even when it feels slow, He’s doing something good and lasting in you.
Action Step: Pause and ask God: “Lord, am I trying to shortcut this process? Am I chasing a quick fix instead of trusting Your way?” Then write down one small, sustainable step you can take this week to care for your body in a way that honors Him – whether it’s drinking an extra glass of water, going for a walk, or simply surrendering your struggles to Him in prayer.
Trust that His way, even if it feels longer, is building something strong and lasting in you.
Happy Sunday!
