Only For a Short Time ~ Sunday Devotion

Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me.” John 7:33 (NIV)

Jesus was only on earth for a short time, and so are you and I. Our days are numbered. Only God knows how many each of us has. How are you spending them?

After my niece was born, I remember my brother telling me that it was the first time he really thought about his own mortality. I think any parent would agree. One day, you’re doing your own thing not worrying about anyone else, then you have a child and you start living differently. You have more focus. You live with purpose. You want to be there to see your child grow and to support her along the way.

Whether you’re a parent or not, you have a purpose. Have you had that moment that brought things into perspective for you? The moment you realized you are only here for a short time? This isn’t a pessimistic message. Remember what 2 Peter tells us about time in God’s eyes, “a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day”?

How will you live the short time you have on earth? There's not time to worry about our weight because God has more important things for us. Share on X

You might live to be 110, or you might meet Jesus sooner. I don’t know. But what I do know is that if we focus on the short time we have and on making it count, we wouldn’t waste it on trivial things. For me, that was my weight. I worried about it. I “watched” it. I tried every diet, gimmick and quick fix to lose weight. Yes, we need to care for ourselves so we can be healthy and live well while we’re here, but that does not require a certain number on the scale.

I missed a lot of special moments because I was distracted by my pursuit of weight loss. I allowed my insecurities to determine how I showed up for this one life I’ve been entrusted with. I might have appeared to be living my life, but I was unsettled. My thoughts were consumed by weight loss worries. But then I had that moment when I was about to turn 40 (over 10 years ago!) that I didn’t want to spend my short time on earth worrying about my weight. It was time to let the Lord set me free. Then, I was able to embrace my age and stage of life and be present to live the life God designed for me.

Let’s follow Jesus’ example and live with purpose during the short time we have here.
