The Power of the Tongue – Sunday Devotion

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV)

Death and life are in the power of the tongue. That’s quite a proclamation, but anyone hurt with words knows the pain they can cause. And the thing about words is that we can’t always see the harm they do. You and I may never know the hurt someone is going through due to something someone said to them, even worse, something we ourselves said carelessly without realizing the impact.

You also might not realize that those negative statements you say about yourself are having a lasting effect on your mindset and your actions.

The power of the tongue. It can lift up or tear down. It can encourage or discourage. While you might say something to someone then never think of it again, that person might replay those words over and over. Are those words propelling her forward or are they keeping her stuck?

What about the words that are playing in your own mind? Are they lifegiving? Do you have positive statements on repeat in your mind? Are you hiding God’s Word in your heart so that you stay close to Him?

It’s time to take inventory of what you say. Your words matter – the ones you speak to others and the ones you speak to yourself.

Action Step: Pause before you speak – to another and to the person looking back at you in the mirror.

Bonus: Sign up for my Weigh Your Words Challenge that begins on February 20, 2022. Start speaking life into your own soul and get ready for the change that’ll happen as a result!!

Happy Sunday!
