Obey God ~ Sunday Devotion

“But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:29 (NKJV)

It takes courage to keep your eyes on Jesus and obey God when there are so many things vying for your attention.

I’m thinking back to a time when I was doing a high ropes course. I had to get from one platform to another by essentially walking a tightrope. The person coaching me through it reminded me to keep my eyes on him and my end point rather than the ground below, the leaves blowing in the trees, and even the shouts of encouragement from the others in the group. It was hard to stay focused and not become distracted. The solid ground, leaves, and supportive people are all good things, right? But they weren’t the best focus in that situation.

We have that same struggle right now. You have a lot of people trying to give you diet plans and programs to help you lose weight (because that’s the answer to all your problems, right? WRONG!). Just like the shouts of encouragement from my teammates, some might appear to be helpful, but even that can be a distraction. It requires courage for you to obey God about how to care for your body rather than someone claiming to know you better than you know yourself.

Will you choose to obey God rather than men? Only God has your best interest in mind. He knows you best. Share on X

This verse is referring to persecution the apostles were facing. You and I don’t face the same kind today, but we face peer pressure (at all ages!) about what is acceptable in society in regard to how we look. Because of that, too many women rely on someone else to tell them how to care for their bodies. The thing is, it’s not caring to restrict, shame, and punish yourself.

Do you have your eyes fixed on Jesus?

How do you care for your body? Do you obey God or look to man to guide you?

Have you compromised in an area of your life just to fit in or to fit an image?

Have courage. Obey God’s guidance in establishing your plan so that you can live fit and free and embrace this age and stage of life.

Action Step: Choose to obey God today. Remove the distractions from your life. This might require you to unfollow accounts or unsubscribe from a plan or program. You can trust God to guide you with His Holy Spirit. To be sure, you and I were made to be in community, but make sure that community points you towards Jesus.

Happy Sunday!
