Do Not Be Deceived ~ Sunday Devotional

Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NKJV)

At what point in our lives did we become deceived by messages leading us to believe that our bodies would be better if they were smaller?

When did young girls, although boys aren’t exempt from this either, start hearing about diets and how to manipulate their bodies?

Children do pretty good on their own listening to and honoring their bodies.

But at some point those good habits were interrupted.

Somewhere along the line the diet industry and the messaging that goes along with it corrupted an influential caregiver in the child’s life, or the child accessed that messaging through social media, the internet, on a tv commercial, or a magazine at the checkout stand.

My mom was deceived. As a result, I was deceived. Then I fed the deception by continuing to buy into the messaging that constantly surrounded me as I became an adult.

The deception and the messages went like this:

Thinner is better.

Losing weight needs to be your life’s purpose.

The first thing people notice about you is your weight.

The only way to lose weight is to buy a specific product.

If you’re not on a diet, you’re not working hard enough.

You are good/bad based on the foods you eat.

The lies are endless.

We’ve been misled, but we don’t have to continue to follow that path.

In fact, it’s time to stop the cycle. Stop it for ourselves and stop it for the girls and boys watching us.

Be the good. Change the story. Start believing the truth for yourself,  then be an example by living the truth for others.

Happy Sunday!
