Help From Others ~ Sunday Devotion

The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.” John 11:44 (NIV)

When God set me free, I still had some work to do. And I couldn’t do it all on my own.

There are people who have smoked all their lives then one day decide to quit. And that’s that. They quit cold turkey and don’t even miss it. While that’s great, that’s not how it always happens. Sometimes, there are setbacks. If they don’t have another cigarette, they might still have struggles. They struggle with the urges and the jumbled emotions that come with letting go of that which had such a hold on them. Oftentimes, they need group support or an accountability partner.

We need help from others. Yes, we need Jesus, but He also provides people to travel our faith and fitness journey with us. Share on X

It was the same way for me more than 10 years ago when God set me free from a lifelong pursuit of weight loss and struggles with body image. I didn’t walk out of that desert and feel pretty. While I left behind diets, gimmicks, and quick fixes, I won’t even try to tell you that I haven’t been tempted by them. In fact, I’ve spent time scrolling and considering one thing or another, but something always stops me. Sometimes, it’s the Holy Spirit that reminds me how far God brought me and that I don’t want to go back to that bondage. Other times, it’s the support and accountability I get from other women that gives me the courage to keep my eyes on Jesus and my eyes on my own paper when it comes to my health and fitness. I’m reminded of what Jesus did for me, and I get help from others to stay on that course.

Jesus might have called Lazarus out the cave and breathed new life into him, but he was still wrapped up. After Jesus set him free, he needed help from others to fully live that set-free life.

It’s okay to need help. In fact, you were not created to live life on your own. Let those that Jesus has placed around you help you.

Action Step: Are you trying to live your life on your own? Perhaps you have Jesus, but you think that’s all you need? Yes, you need Jesus, but Jesus knows that you need others, too. He will provide people for you. Will you let them help you?

Happy Sunday!
