God Made Us Both ~ Sunday Devotion
Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers? Job 31:15 (NIV)
We are all different, yet we are the same. We came from the same place and were created by the same God. Instead of looking at someone else and comparing myself to her, trying to find ways I might be better, look better, etc., how about I ask, “Did not the same One form us both?”
In this passage, Job is referring to his servants. He acknowledged that he and they are not much different. They were created the same way by the same God making them both valuable. Job didn’t think himself better than they.
When I was younger, I often compared myself to other girls in high school. As I got older, I continued to compare myself to other women, even friends of mine. Who wore it better? Who looked thinner? Who was more successful?
Why did those things matter? Why did I feel threatened by the looks or success of another. God made us both. Neither better than the other. When we acknowledge our sameness then we are free to also celebrate our differences.
Let’s allow this verse to remind us that God made us both. We are all valuable in His sight.
When thoughts of comparison start to filter in, do the following to shift that mindset:
- Focus on gratitude. Be thankful for who and how God made you.
- Cheer for your sister. Recognize the good in others. Give someone a compliment or word of encouragement.
- Know who you are. You are a beloved child of God, the daughter of a King.
- Do something that brings you joy. Honor your unique gifts and talents.
When we acknowledge our sameness then we are free to celebrate our differences. Share on X
Falling into the trap of comparison results in one of two things: insecurity or pride. Neither draw us closer to the Lord or closer to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let’s celebrate how God made us and how His love is enough for all of us.
Action Step: Take a moment to evaluate your feelings about who and how God made you. Have you fallen into the trap of comparison? Ask God’s forgiveness, then let Him wrap you in His loving arms. This is where you will find acceptance and confidence.
Happy Sunday!
