Has the Pursuit of Health and Fitness Become an Idol? ~ Sunday Devotion
Who would form a god or mold an image that profits him nothing? Isaiah 44:10 (NKJV)
Truthfully, I would. In fact, I did. I made the pursuit of weight loss an idol in my life. I molded it into an image that profited me nothing. I bought into a lie that told me I’d only be worthy when I attained a better looking body, a smaller body. Then I would have value. Then I would be popular. Then I would get the guy. Then I would be confident. Losing weight would be the answer to all my problems. It became my life’s purpose.
I invested my time and my resources into anything that promised to help me lose a few pounds. That pursuit took top priority in my life. I became obsessed with tracking my calories and getting in my workouts. It was all I thought about. I planned my life around it. While pursuing a healthy lifestyle is beneficial, allowing that pursuit to become your main focus can quickly turn it into an idol.
No amount of exercise or adherence to an eating plan can fill the void that only God can satisfy. If our worth becomes tied to the number on the scale or how we compare ourselves to others, we lose sight of our true identity in Jesus Christ.
It's biblical to pursue a healthy lifestyle, but too easily the pursuit of fitness become an idol unless we integrate it into our faith. Share on XAre you prioritizing your health in a way that honors God, or has the pursuit of weight loss become an idol in your life? Get honest with yourself. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas where you might be placing more trust in fitness routines or diet plans than in God’s unconditional love and acceptance.
To be sure, our bodies are important, but they are not intended to be our primary focus. True freedom is found in knowing that our worth is secure in the Lord, regardless of how we look or what we weigh. Your body is a temple. We see that in scripture. It is worthy of care, but it is not to be worshiped.
Action Step: Ask the Lord to help you shift your focus from your outward appearance that fades to your inward appearance that He values. Then, commit to taking an integrated approach to your health and fitness so that you can embrace your age and stage of life and live fit and free.
Happy Sunday!
