First Do This ~ Sunday Devotion
First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. Matthew 23:26 (NIV)
Have you ever opened a jug of milk that’s gone bad? How about going as far as pouring a glass only to take a drink and realize you shouldn’t have? It looked good from the outside. Milk doesn’t change colors when it goes bad. It looks the same on day one as it does ten days later. That’s why it’s important to first inspect what’s inside the jug. A quick sniff is all it’ll take!
There are a lot of people walking around looking good on the outside – wearing a smile, fit body, nice home, successful career – but on the inside they’re anything but good. They’re struggling with feelings of guilt and shame. They’re haunted by a difficult past. They’re mourning a failed relationship. They’re simply not comfortable in their own skin. Are you attempting to transform a part of your life? Do this: Ask Jesus to help you work on the inside first. The outside, whatever area that is, will follow suit. Click To Tweet
I recall a conversation I had with a friend many years ago. She was admiring the fitness of a mutual acquaintance and mentioned that she wished she looked like her. Knowing a little more about the person, I knew that she was also struggling with other things in life. And she wasn’t walking with Jesus. I may not have that body, but I had Jesus. That trumps all. He trumps all.
Sometimes we seek superficial things thinking that achieving them will help us feel better, will fill the void in our hearts. But that’s the backwards approach. We must first do this: Clean the inside. But this is not a job we can do on our own. We need Jesus.
Go to Jesus. Let Him clean the inside. He can forgive your sin. Heal your hurt. Make you whole.
Action Step: Are you attempting to transform a part of your life? Do this: Ask Jesus to help you work on the inside first. The outside, whatever area that is, will follow suit.
