What Do I Do With Freedom? ~ Sunday Devotion
So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15 (NLT)
Many communities offer re-entry programs for people who have been incarcerated. Why? It’s difficult to go from being detained and confined to a small space with a set schedule and a list of rules to freedom. Some people are not prepared. They don’t know what to do with freedom.
We’ve heard the stories of young people who live so-called “sheltered lives,” then go off to college and “go wild.” They don’t know what to do with their newfound freedom.

It can be the same with us. I’ve heard it from women who want to break free from a world of diets, gimmicks, and quick fixes, but they don’t know how to live their lives not on a diet. They’ve spent so many years letting someone else tell them what to eat and how to exercise that they don’t know how to listen to their own bodies and honor the unique way they’ve been created. Just like the verse says, this makes them fearful. They fear that they’ll gain weight if they’re not on a diet. And heaven forbid they’d ditch the scale! How will they live without knowing that number?? But as a child of God, we have the privilege to live in freedom.
When God set me free from a life focused on weight loss, I wasn’t sure how to live free. I didn’t immediately start feeling confident. I didn’t initially throw away my scale or never track another calorie. My mind wasn’t miraculously clear and free from negative self-talk. It took me some time. (I still have to be intentional.) God had to take me through His own re-entry program. I had to embrace the truth of His Word and what it said about me. He helped me get back to how He designed me to live. Children eat when they’re hungry and stop when they’re full. They move about a lot and rest when they get tired. It sounds simple, and it is, before we’re taken captive by the ways of the world.
God wants to set you free. Why? So that you can fully step into the life He’s designed for you to live.
Action Step: Have you been reluctant to allow God to set you free because you don’t know what to do with freedom? God has a safe path for you to follow if you’ll allow Him to lead you out of your wilderness. That path will have you embracing your age and stage of life and living fit and free.
Happy Sunday!
