Deep Roots ~ Sunday Devotion
But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NLT)
Recently I asked some women in my Faith and Fitness Membership Community what came to mind when they thought of their transformation as a result of participating in the program. Someone said, “Deep roots.”
She went on to explain it this way: Building her fitness on a foundation of faith has given both her faith and fitness deep roots. She’s grounded. She’s rooted in God’s Word. When diet trends and quick fixes come along, she’s not moved by them. Her confidence is in the Lord, not in her body size. Because her confidence is in the Lord, she has the courage to make healthy choices that are right for her, at her age and stage of life. In fact, she’s embracing it.
When she’s tempted to go back to a quick fix that only gives short-term results, she has the confidence to press forward instead of look back. When feelings of insecurity and comparison start to rise, she remembers who she belongs to and because of Christ, she is enough. Just like the leaves that stay green and continue to produce fruit because the tree has deep roots, the women who have set their fitness on a foundation of faith remain consistent on their healthy living journey.
When you consider your commitment to your fitness and how you approach it, consider diets, gimmicks, and quick fixes to be the heat and months of drought referred to in this verse. If you don’t have deep roots, you’ll jump on the latest bandwagon. You’ll allow your confidence in who you are and how you were created to waver resulting in another ride on the diet roller coaster. It’s time to grow deep roots.
Because we are rooted in Christ, we are confident women! Our trust, confidence, and hope is in Someone who will never fail us.
Action Step: Are you rooted in Christ? Are you committed to a faith-focused approach to your fitness so that you’re not relying on outward appearance to fuel your confidence? True confidence is only a result of being rooted in Christ.
