Comparison ~ Sunday Devotion
We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 2 Corinthians 10:12 (NIV)
A few years ago, I read a book titled Why Her? Today’s verse was the key verse, and this quote from the book stood out to me: Comparison brings out our competitive streak, which eats away at our contentment, which then starts to destroy our confidence, until we’re fighting to keep up with an unrealistic standard.
In 2 Corinthians 10, Paul is defending his ministry and making it clear that he does not, nor do we as Christ followers, live by the world’s standards. Our lives, our purposes, are about something different, something more. We are to pursue Christ and His plan for our lives.
Nothing beneficial comes from comparison. At first, you might think that comparing yourself to someone else or to a previous version of yourself will provide motivation or make you feel better about yourself. Instead, the opposite happens. Your confidence tanks. When you never reach the unattainable goal, you’ll quit working on yourself completely and drown in insecurity.
Nothing beneficial comes from comparison. Instead, say no to comparison in your life and start living confidently today. Click To Tweet
When we have our eyes on Jesus and focus on living the life He’s designed for us, we don’t have room or time for comparison. I’ve been distracted by comparison too many times. I’ve compared myself with others as well as with past versions of myself. But when I decided to embrace my age and stage of life, I started living confidently as who I am in Christ. That invitation is open to you too!
Today, we celebrate the birth of Jesus. He came so that we may have life. You were created on purpose, and God has a plan for you. Don’t let comparison distract you from this gift. Keep your eyes on your own paper and embrace your age and stage of life. Receiving this gift, the gift of your unique life, is the best gift you can give the Savior today.
Action Step: Say “No” to comparison in your life and embrace God’s plan for you. Start living confidently today.
