change in perspective

We Sat on the “Wrong” Side of Church

We sat on the “wrong” side of church recently. Well, not that there’s truly a right or wrong side of church—but it still felt strange. Let me explain.

Major renovations just began at our church. The door Ethan and I usually enter on Friday mornings was closed, so we had to use a different one. Just stepping through that unfamiliar doorway felt odd. The view was completely different from what I’d seen hundreds of times before.

Then we did something even more unusual… we sat on the other side of church. And yes—it gave me a wobbly feeling.

Here we were in the church we have attended for years, and we’re looking at it from a completely different angle. I even noticed people differently—the same faithful faces, still in their “assigned seats” (you know what I mean… we all have our pew).

This had me thinking about perspective. How we start seeing things from only one angle. Sometimes, though, we need to shift our angle and look again.

By the end of the service, I had settled in, and I felt the familiarity and peace that I usually do when I attend Friday morning church. But it took a moment.

Maybe your health and fitness journey is the same way.

  • Have you been seeing it from the same perspective for years—believing that health equals weight loss?
  • Have you been viewing your body as something that needs to be smaller, “fixed,” or “good enough” only when it meets certain standards?
  • Have you approached food the same way meal after meal—seeing it as the enemy or as the judge of your worth?

Sometimes, a change in perspective is exactly what we need.

Our pastor reminded us that the renovation won’t be easy—there will be growing pains and adjustments along the way. But, he said, “the result will be worth it, so let’s embrace it.”

It’s the same with our health and fitness. As we age, our needs and bodies change. We have to be willing to make adjustments, see things from a new angle, and embrace the process.

When you shift your perspective, you may discover that the view was never the problem—only the way you were looking at it.

Here’s to embracing our age and stage of life with a fresh perspective!
