Break the Chains ~ Sunday Devotion

He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. Psalm 107:14 (NIV)

I was in bondage. The number on the scale had a hold on me. My negative reaction to my reflection in the mirror had a hold on me. The allure of weight loss strategies had a hold on me. I was bound up in all ways – mentally, spiritually, and physically. I wasn’t chained to a wall, but everything I thought about, how I approached my life, and even my prayers focused on this one thing – weight loss.

Freedom. I wanted it so badly, but I didn’t know that I could have that and still be fit and healthy. I feared that if I found freedom, I’d also find an extra 20 pounds! I couldn’t fathom that I could be set free from all of my weight loss worries and the obsessions that came with them and still maintain a healthy weight.

But I was tired. I was so tired of this thing holding me hostage. I was in chains. I knew it, but I didn’t know how to break the chains. I was tired of worrying about my weight all the time. I was tired of hiding. I was tired of self-imposed comparison. I wanted my life to count for more than the calories I consumed and the hours I spent burning them off. I felt shallow for making this my life’s purpose, but I was so afraid of what might happen if I stopped the pursuit.

It took nearly 40 years, but I finally allowed God to break the chains that held me. He set me free. Just like He did for the Israelites in today’s verse, God did for me. He brought me out of the darkness, and He broke the chains.

God can break the chains of weight and body image that have you bound up. He did it for me and wants to do it for you too. #FaithAndFitness #BreakingFree Click To Tweet

He can do that for you too! It is possible to live fit and free!

Freedom. God wants to break the chains in your life. He doesn’t want you to be in bondage to negative self-talk or an unhealthy relationship with food and your body. He loves you. He created you. And He wants you to celebrate who you are in Him.

Action Step: Give your worries to the Lord. Reach out to Him, and He’ll be there to lead you out of the darkness and to break the chains that have you bound up.

It’s time to start living fit and free!
