Bread for Life and Of Life ~ Sunday Devotion
But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Matthew 4:4 (NKJV)
Here, Jesus declares that we not only need bread for life but we also need the Bread of Life. Once again in His Word, He models how we are to live. We need both physical and spiritual nourishment.
Too often, we get focused on our physical body and the nourishment it requires. We read everything we can on nutrition to determine the healthiest ways to live and how to lose weight while neglecting our spiritual needs. But, our spirit needs to be nourished by the Bread of Life regularly.
To live a sustainable healthy life we need both bread for life and the Bread of Life.
Integrating our faith and fitness is the only way to approach healthy living to get sustainable lasting results. When we integrate our faith and fitness, we consult our Creator and His manual on how to live. Through His Word and Holy Spirit, He shows us how to care for our unique bodies. As a result, we have the energy and stamina to live the life God has designed for us to live. We are better equipped to love and serve others. It’s clear in scripture that we are to address both our physical and spiritual needs. It might seem easy to understand that we shouldn’t only look after our physical needs but you might question why we shouldn’t only look after our spiritual needs. Of course, our spirits and our relationship with Jesus is our top priority in life. But, He’s entrusted to us a physical body to do what He’s called us to do. Therefore, we must care for it well. It’s how we live out the life He’s designed for us to live.
Action Step: Do you struggle to find the balance to care for both your physical and spiritual needs? Have you become more focused on your physical health than your spiritual health? Have you neglected your physical wellbeing because you don’t think it’s important to the Lord? It’s time to start honoring God by honoring your body.
