Beauty Fades ~ Sunday Devotional
How is it that we’ve bought into the lie that our life’s purpose is to lose weight? That we must pursue beauty at all costs?
And what is beauty anyway?
By society’s standards it’s a young, thin body.
But here’s the deal: we all age and with age comes change. Whether you’re a person or a flower. In fact, the alternative of aging is, well, not being here at all.
“As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever.” And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.” 1 Peter 1:24-25 (NLT)
Other translations use words like droops and dries up. That made me chuckle as I thought of this scripture in relation to our aging bodies. If you’re beyond your mid-40s like I am, I imagine you’re familiar with words like drooping, fading, and withering when it comes to your body! Ha!
But this is a serious matter.
What are you pursuing?
Are you pursuing the world’s standards of beauty more than you are pursuing Christ?
Everyone ages. As part of that process, we change. It’s the way God made it to be. For flowers. For grass. And for people.
You and I will eventually fade away. It’s called the cycle of life.
So, do we spend our days in constant pursuit of weight loss only to feel frustrated at every corner?
Or do we pursue the Lord and simply be a good steward of that which He’s entrusted us with?
I believe He wants us to pursue Him. In doing so we will also pursue health and wellness but not at the cost of our focus on Him. Instead it will be in a way that honors Him.
So, while the messages around us trend towards beauty at all costs, let’s choose to listen to God’s Word and allow that message to guide us to what He wants us to pursue.
Happy Sunday!
