Do Not Be Deceived ~ Sunday Devotion

They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. 2 Timothy 3:6-7 (NIV)

Before we get sidetracked about Paul’s reference to “gullible women” in this text, let’s remember that in that day women didn’t have the same access to education and information as men. They were more vulnerable to false teachings. But let’s be real. It still happens today to men and women alike.

How many times have you had a spam email, but there’s just a little something about it that makes you think, “Maybe, just maybe, this is the real thing.” Or, your phone rings with a local number and business name, and you pick it up, but it’s spam? They disguise themselves as someone you know. Man or woman, you can be deceived.

Know the truth of God's Word so that you will not be deceived when diet culture comes knocking on your door. Share on X

Let’s apply this verse to today. One of the biggest deceptions I see day in and day out is the messaging from diet culture. Too many women, although men aren’t exempt, buy into the false teachings of diet culture. With promises of quick fixes and miraculous transformations, these women are led astray and get wrapped into something that steals their time, money, and mental energy.

Diet culture preys on the vulnerability of women just like the verse suggests. The desire to be accepted, loved, and found attractive. But the truth is: you are accepted. You are loved. You are the apple of the Father’s eye. All because you were created by Someone who loves you just as you are. That is the truth. But it requires us being in the Word and having a relationship with the Creator to believe and receive that truth into our lives.

Have you received Christ’s love for and acceptance of you? Your happiness and fulfillment will never be found in a diet plan or when you step on a scale and finally reach your goal weight. It’ll never be enough. Focus on knowing God and knowing what His Word says about you.

Action Step: If you want a true transformation, start by changing your focus and changing your mind. Stop buying into the false promises of diet culture and instead invest in learning the trustworthy promises of God’s Word. Then live this example so that the women who come behind you will not be swayed by these false messages.
