How to Balance Effort with Ease
I do yoga every morning to get the blood flowing through my body. I choose a flow that’s 10~30 minutes long. Recently, the instructor coached us about how to balance effort with ease. As I was holding a plank, she asked, “Where can you still find ease?”
Have you ever done a plank? I’m not sure many people would say there’s anything easy about it! But her point had me thinking about the bigger picture and how to apply this to other areas of my life. (Yoga is good for that!)
Living a healthy life, making healthy choices, seems hard, especially to someone who hasn’t been living healthy on a regular basis. Too many people find themselves white-knuckling their way through the day attempting to follow rules and do things they think they should be doing. Taking a healthy approach to life can become a natural way to live when we learn how to find ease in doing so.
Taking a healthy approach to life can become a natural way to live when we learn how to find ease in doing so. Share on XFor example, you can set a goal like increasing your step count or increasing your water intake (many women just do that during my annual Drink More Water Challenge). The goal is the effort, but the ease comes in when you break it down to manageable steps. You might want to get to 10,000 steps a day, but if you’re starting at 2,000 steps, make your first task to get to 3,000 steps. Get consistent with that before you add on. If you’re drinking three glasses of water a day, try adding one glass instead of doubling it. Balance effort with ease.
We often talk about routine in my Faith and Fitness Support and Accountability Community. We know that routine promotes productivity and health, but establishing a routine can take effort. However, you can find ease by allowing for some flexibility in your routine to listen to your body and rest when necessary.
If you find yourself feeling exhausted mentally or physically because of the things you’re doing to live a healthy life, take a moment to step back and ask yourself, Where can I find ease?
How can you work with your spirit, mind, and/or body instead of on it? Your body is not your enemy. Your age is not your enemy. You can embrace your age and stage of life when you start honoring who and how God made you. To do that, balance effort with ease.
