Always Available ~ Sunday Devotional
Be my strong refuge, to which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress. Psalm 71:3 (NKJV)
God provides us with continual safety. He is a rock and a fortress. The safest place to be, a place that is always available to us. But we must go to Him.
My husband and I could not be more different when it comes to severe storm warnings. He makes sure there are flashlights available, and he’s ready to go to the basement at the first sign of danger. I, on the other hand, get irritated if a good tv show is interrupted with weather reports and only make sure my Kindle is fully charged so I can keep reading if the lights go out. When bedtime comes, I’m headed upstairs sure that Kent will let me know if I need to head to the basement. (But it had better be clear and present danger!)
Although my basement is always available for me to go to, I rarely use it. Instead, I take my chances that the storm will blow over.
“Better safe than sorry.”
That’s my husband’s approach to a storm, and frankly, in much of his life. I live a bit more on the edge. And that might be fine for some things, but living on the edge is not a good approach to my faith.
If God is always available to us, why don’t we go to Him daily? Or maybe you do. I hope that you do. I have learned it’s the only way I can live my life.
Being in the basement does not guarantee that the storm will not come, but it does guarantee that we are in the safest place possible.
Just the same, taking refuge in God’s arms does not guarantee that storms will not blow into our lives. It simply guarantees that we are in the safest place to weather those storms.
Safe in God’s embrace provides peace and comfort. Sheltered in His refuge gives us confidence that we will be okay.
While God is always available, don’t wait until a storm blows in. Take refuge in His presence daily.
Happy Sunday!
