About Sacrifice ~ Sunday Devotion
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:24-25 (NIV)
We don’t like words like crucify and sacrifice. It’s hard to think about what our Lord did for us on the cross. He was crucified and became our sacrifice. We are free because He paid the price.
We are also called to sacrifice. Following Christ requires us to crucify some things in our own lives.
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. These are the words that come right after the list of the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5.
The fruit of the Spirit isn’t our natural response. When we operate in the flesh, we get impatient and lack self-control. We can be harsh and unkind. Following Christ and keeping in step with His Spirit requires us to make sacrifices and crucify our own fleshly desires.
Christ set us free to be free in Him. He lived a life of sacrifice, and we too must choose to sacrifice.
When you keep in step with the Spirit, you follow His lead to do that which you are called to do, no matter the price…whether it’s showing kindness to someone who has wronged you or responding gently when you’ve been treated harshly.
When we keep in step with the Spirit, we say no to the temptations that entice us and love and serve those around us.
To live fit and free requires sacrifice. We must surrender our focus on weight loss and trust the Lord to guide our efforts toward lasting health. It’s not always easy, but then again, the Cross wasn’t easy. And yet, Jesus did the hard thing. He endured the unimaginable. May we keep in step with the Spirit, no matter what it requires of us.
Action Step: Is there an area of your life that you need to lay on the altar before the Lord so that you can walk in His ways? Make that sacrifice today. There’s nothing better than living by the Spirit.
